Kenny Burns believes Nottingham Forest should “think about letting (Danny Fox) go”, with the defender having struggled for form this season. Fox has made 18 appearances for Forest but has missed a number of games due to injury and is out of contract at the end of the campaign. The left-back could be on his way out of Forest next summer as a result, and Burns says he wouldn’t stand in his way.

Writing in his column for Nottinghamshire Live, he said: “It will be interesting to see what happens with Danny Fox, whether he ends up staying at Nottingham Forest or not. He is out of contract in the summer, so I would maybe think about letting him go. But it just depends on our injury situation and whether we would need another centre-half to replace him.”

Fox has made a total of 127 appearances in all competitions for Forest since initially joining the Reds on loan in 2014 and making the move permanent in 2015. The 32-year-old has been a terrific servant at the City Ground but there’s stiff competition from the likes of Michael Dawson, Michael Hefele, Tobias Figueiredo and new-boy Yohan Benalouane for a starting place.

Burns would be willing to let Fox depart so long as Forest don’t leave themselves short on options at centre-back. New manager Martin O’Neill has three injuries to the backline to contend with. Dawson has a hamstring problem but should return in late-January, Hefele could be sidelined until February and Figueiredo should be back anytime now.
