Whilst he might not be prominent, this defender still has a future at The City Ground – Opinion

|

He’s almost become the forgotten man at Forest this season.

Alexander Milosevic has been with the club a relatively short time, having only signed in February of this year and despite making 12 appearances last season, he has yet to feature under Sabri Lamouchi.

The defender gave an update on his Instagram page the other day, saying that despite the lack of appearances, he was ‘still alive with a smile’. I have seen a lot of other websites discussing whether or not he has a future at Nottingham Forest, so I thought I’d weigh into the discussion with some thoughts of my own.

I think a lot of it is going to depend on how long the rest of the Forest centre-backs plan on sticking around. Players like Michael Dawson, Yohan Benalouane and Joe Worrall all have contracts that expire at the end of the season, as does Milosevic. If the older players like Dawson and Benalouane are set to leave the City Ground at the end of the season, Dawson possibly through retirement at the age of 36, and Benalouane through a transfer if reports are to be believed, then that should clear a pathway.

I have always maintained that you should have two players for each position on the pitch as the bare minimum, so if Dawson and Benalouane depart then that leaves us with five. And with Michael Hefele reportedly very much not in Sabri Lamouchi’s plans, we can probably put him in the ‘not likely to be here long’ category, which leaves us with four. I’m not counting Joe Worrall in that last part, given the amount of attention and praise that is going his way recently, I think it’s fair to say that he’ll be part of the setup next season.

So whilst he might not have a role in the immediate future, I think it is important that we keep hold of him on our books for next year, potentially as a backup for the partnership of Chema and Worrall that I have talked about recently.

What about you? Do you think Milosevic still has a role at The City Ground? Or do you think that he is so far down the pecking order that it’s worth us looking at shipping him out.
