Michael Hefele gave a long-awaited injury update on Instagram, revealing that he’s still in recovery from his achilles problem. The 29-year-old has been out of action since January and has yet to return to full training with the Nottingham Forest first-team.

With Michael Dawson, Joe Worrall, Tobias Figueiredo, Jack Robinson, Alexander Milosevic, Chema and Yohan Benalouane for competition in defence, it’s hard to see Hefele making another appearance for Forest even when he does return to fitness.

Sabri Lamouchi wanted to sell the German over the summer and may try to offload him in January instead. Hefele is surplus to requirements after falling down the pecking order during his lengthy layout and underperforming in certain fixtures when he was fit.

Forest are more than coping without him. The Reds currently sit ninth in the Championship with 12 points from seven games, coming off the back of three wins and two draws from their last five. Lamouchi’s men also have the third-best defensive record in the division (6), so it’s unlikely that the backline will be radically altered.

Figueiredo, Milosevic, Chema and Robinson can’t even get in the starting eleven due to Dawson and Worrall’s fine firm at centre-back, so Hefele’s time at the City Ground may soon be up. It’s positive news that he’s working hard to return, but whether supporters see him back out on the pitch remains to be seen.
