Well, we know that we’re going to have depth at one position next season, although it could still do with a few more faces in there.
The club announced yesterday morning that club captain Michael Dawson has extended his stay at the City Ground for another year, meaning that we have four centre-backs under contract through into next season, although depending on how the transfer window goes and if clubs come in for our players like Joe Worrall, things might change, but at least we’re at a good starting point.
The same can’t be said for one other position in the team though, and that’s the goalkeeper position.
As things stand, with both Luke Steele and Jordan Smith set to be out of contract at the end of the season, we are going into the 2020/21 campaign with only one goalkeeper in the senior squad, and that’s Brice Samba.
How many goalkeepers will Forest sign this summer?
Zero
One
Two
Over two
Now given how impressive the Congolese stopper has been this season, he’s likely to have the number one spot locked up next season, so the only question remains is how do we go about dealing with the backup spot?
Earlier in the season, I spoke about how I believe a club needs three goalkeepers in order to succeed, and if we were to follow that logic, then the club needs to sign another goalkeeper this summer or maybe even two, depending on if you want to promote one of the kids in the academy.
Either way, it’s a position that hasn’t really been talked about in the past few months, and as the performances of Samba have shown after he took over from Aro Muric following a poor start to the season from the Kosovan shows that you need to have a decent backup option if things go wrong, and heading into 2020/21, Forest don’t have that position filled yet.
What about you? What do you make of Forest’s goalkeeper situation heading into the summer and next season?
