Nottingham Forest need a new left-back after failing to replace Danny Fox in January. The Reds have been linked with Nathan McGinley of Forest Green Rovers, Tom Lockyer of Bristol Rovers, Caner Cavlan of Austria Wien and Martin Olsson following his release from Swansea City.

One player they should consider, however, is Pape Souare. The 29-year-old was recently released by Crystal Palace. Whether he’s open to joining a Championship side remains to be seen, but he may not command a starting place in the Premier League.

He earned £30k-per-week at Selhurst Park, so he won’t break the bank for Forest, but the Senegalese international could have a lot of interest this summer. Souare spent four years at Palace and made 63 appearances in all competitions, making three assists.

Souare would greatly improve the Forest squad, but the Reds may not be top of his list of clubs to join – Olympique Marseille reportedly lead the race for his signature. Given the left-back started his career in France, it’s hard to see him turning down a move from a Ligue 1 giant to come to the City Ground.

Nevertheless, the Reds should at least try to get a dialogue going with Souare’s representatives as he would be a brilliant acquisition.
