Opinion: Martin O’Neill could lose Nottingham Forest man, promotion may decide future

|

According to Ed Aarons of the Guardian, Yohan Benalouane is a target for Leeds United and Cardiff City. The Nottingham Forest has impressed since joining from Leicester City in mid-January, but his time at the City Ground could be short-lived.

Leeds may be looking to bolster their backline and could convince Benalouane to Elland Road if they have Premier League football next season. The Whites are currently third in the Championship, one point off an automatic promotion place with eight games remaining.

Cardiff City are in a relegation battle to stay in the Premier League. The Bluebirds sit 18th in the table with 28 points from 30 games and are two points adrift of safety. They could yet stay in the division and would be another viable option for Benalouane.

The 31-year-old’s third choice could be to remain at Forest. He’s made nine appearances in all competitions, scoring one goal and is already a fan-favourite. Forest are only three points adrift of the playoffs with eight games remaining, so they could yet provide Premier League football to Benalouane.

His contract has over 12 months to run, but Martin O’Neill will likely imagine his future depends on the outcome of this season.
