Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, there’s still a long way to go – Opinion

It probably is too early to start talking about it, but let’s not that get in the way of a good debate.

It’s fair to say that fans were incredibly excited with how things went on Saturday. The unbeaten run continues, and things are going in the right direction. However, there was one fan who decided to take those good feelings a little too far with her reaction. After the game, Forest fan @deblee_smith asked the question whether or not it was ‘too early’ to start talking about promotion, although I don’t think she was being totally serious about it.

And it would appear that a lot of Nottingham Forest fans were quick to try and calm her down judging by some of the responses the tweet got. It’s probably the right attitude to have, especially in the aftermath of such a dramatic victory with an 85th-minute winner. However, a discussion about our season expectations is a good one to have every now and again. Just to reassess how things have gone and if we need to adjust how we think the team is doing.

My one concern is that people are going to start becoming obsessed with promotion, only to then be utterly devastated and disappointed before turning on the manager because he didn’t achieve it. I think Sabri Lamouchi is a very astute manager and has the potential to do well in this division, but I’m just going to air on the side of caution. Expectations from outside the club were relatively low during the summer, so long as we can be above that, I’ll be happy.

Although I must confess I did say at the start of the season that I thought this Forest team had the potential to do something, I’m certainly not expecting them to do anything spectacular. Well not yet anyway, if we start getting towards the unbeaten run record that Brian Clough’s team put up back in the late 1970s, then I’ll start getting excited.

What do you think? Do you think that it’s too early to start talking about promotion? Or do you think that it’s good to set your targets out this early?
