Looks like people are trying to bring emotion into this when really it could end up holding back the deal.

According to a recent report in The Sun (15/11/19, page 74), Everton, Southampton and Crystal Palace are all circling around Nottingham Forest’s winger turned right-back Matty Cash, with a fee of £12m likely to be in the offing come the January transfer window.

And whilst playing in the Premier League brings a certain level of prestige to it, former Red Garry Birtles thinks that it would be a mistake for Cash to consider making a move.

Speaking to Nottinghamshire Live, Birtles believes that moves like these don’t always work out for the best, and he has a few examples to prove it:

“Oliver Burke, Ben Brereton, Ben Osborn and even Britt Assombalonga left the club seeking bigger and better things, and you’d have to say, none really have. Burke has struggled, Brereton’s Blackburn move probably hasn’t worked out the way he would have liked, Osborn can’t get into the Sheffield United team and as for Middlesbrough, well, just look at their league position. So that should act as a word of warning that the grass isn’t always as green as you think it might be.”

Whilst it’s all well and good him talking about Cash and what potential career he might have away from Nottingham, the question that comes out of that statement for me is quite simply, who cares?

As I have said previously, I think that Forest need to sell Cash in the upcoming window, as it will give the club a chance to reinvest the money in a couple of areas that need addressing in the team, such as up-front to partner Lewis Grabban. Add to that the fact that Carl Jenkinson is now back in training, we could have that right-back position filled in the next couple of weeks.

What happens when he leaves the club, quite frankly doesn’t and should matter to us, all that matters is what happens to Forest and the good that can come out of a move like this. That’s why we need to look at the bigger picture with moves like this, and if we have to sacrifice someone along the way, then so be it.

Should Forest cash in on Matty?

No

Football has become a business, and you can’t afford to let emotions get in the way of things, and with the Premier League arguably closer than it’s ever been for Forest this season based on their fantastic start to the season, we shouldn’t be letting our thoughts and views of Cash get in the way of the bigger prize in all this.
