To be played

Thursday 2nd February 2017 – CHAMPIONSHIP
Huddersfield Town v Brighton & Hove Albion 19:45

The Championship action got underway with action on Tuesday with Barnsley missing a chance to move into the play-offs when beaten 3-1 by Wolves. A second win in three – which followed up the FA Cup win over Liverpool – took Wolves 10 points clear of trouble.

Gianfranco Zola’s wait for a Birmingham win went on with the Blues now eight without a victory. A 1-0 win at St Andrew’s by Reading kept them in 3rd and took them – at the time – to within three points of an automatic promotion place.

Back-to-back defeats ended in emphatic fashion when Brentford thrashed Aston Villa 3-0 at Griffin Park to move above Villa. Steve Bruce’s side have now lost three in a five game winless run.

Bristol City twice came back from behind to end an eight game losing run. This 2-2 kept them clear of the relegation zone and also meant Sheffield Wednesday dropped out of the top 6.

Cardiff’s fourth win in the last six – ending successive defeats – meant the Bluebirds moved 11 points above the relegation zone. A first Preston defeat on six saw North End’s potential play-off push damaged.

Despite a 3-0 defeat Ipswich remain well clear of relegation trouble. This Derby win at Portman Road was enough to put the Rams back into 6th above Sheffield Wednesday on goal difference.

A second win in the last three from Nottingham Forest means they are now eight points above the relegation zone. Rotherham are all but doomed after a third straight defeat – they’ve won only four games all season – to leave them effectively 13 points from safety due to their woeful goal difference.

Blackburn looked to have rescued a point at Ewood Park on Wednesday with a late equaliser. However, Leeds’ last minute winner secured them a 2-1 victory – meaning Rovers remain second bottom – to see the Whites remain right in the promotion battle.

Nigel Clough’s first game in charge of Burton since rejecting a return to Nottingham Forest ended with the Brewers losing for an eighth game in 10. Fulham closed to within three points of the top 6 with this 2-0 win at the Pirelli Stadium.

If Newcastle had recorded a third straight win they would have returned to the top of the table. However, a last minute own goal meant the Magpies had to content with a 2-2 draw against QPR at St James’ Park opening the door to Brighton to move four points clear.
