The games will be spread over three nights with the majority played on Tuesday with the chasing pack having the chance to close the gap on the automatic promotion places.
If Barnsley can record a third straight win against Wolves it could be enough to put them into the play-off places. Wolves will head to Oakwell looking to follow up the FA Cup win at Anfield against Liverpool looking to avoid a second successive league defeat.
The latest attempt for Gianfranco Zola to claim a first win at Birmingham will see the under fire Blues boss at St Andrew’s with promotion chasing Reading – who are looking for a third straight win – the visitors looking to close the gap on automatic promotion to three points, albeit temporarily.
Brentford have won only once in the last five – losing back-to-back Championship outings – with improvement sought when Aston Villa visit Griffin Park. Villa are also on a poor run of form as they haven’t won in four with two defeats suffered.
Nine straight defeats for Bristol City has seen them drop just two points above the relegation zone. If a 10th straight defeat is suffered against promotion chasing Sheffield Wednesday – who are looking to react to a first defeat in seven – at Ashton Gate should other results go against the Robins they could drop into the bottom 3.
A Burton win at the weekend saw the Brewers move out of the relegation zone. Nigel Clough has committed his future to the club and they’ll hope to follow that up with another win at the Pirelli Stadium when Fulham visit.
Should Cardiff suffer a third straight league defeat the Bluebirds could be drawn back into the relegation dogfight. Preston are looking to add to the five game unbeaten run with North End still in with a chance of making the play-off ahead of this meeting at the Cardiff City Stadium.
Ipswich ended a sequence of results with a familiar theme by drawing at the weekend with the Tractor Boys welcoming Derby to Portman Road. The Rams travel two points off a play-off place, which could be regained with a victory.
A relegation battle between Nottingham Forest and Rotherham takes place at the City Ground. Forest are five points clear of trouble and with the much better chance of staying up – but in need of the win – with the Millers cut adrift at the foot of the table and 11 points – and an awful goal difference – from safety.
Back-to-back victories have revived Wigan’s survival hopes but as they weren’t in action at the weekend the Latics dropped into the bottom 3. Victory against Norwich – who are seeking a third straight win that could move them back into the play-off places – could take them out of the relegation zone again.
Wednesday will see relegation threatened Blackburn looking for a win at Ewood Park that could take them out of the relegation zone. However, in order to achieve this Rovers will have to overcome promotion chasing Leeds – who suffered an FA Cup upset defeat at Sutton on Sunday – to have any chance.
If Newcastle are to win for a third straight Championship game – having been thrashed at Oxford in the FA Cup on Saturday – they could return to the top of the table with Brighton not in action until Thursday. QPR will be the visitors to St James’ Park having lost just once in the last five.
Thursday night will see promotion rivals Huddersfield and Brighton meet at the John Smith’s Stadium. Town will retain a play-off position regardless as will Albion an automatic promotion spot with the visitors looking to react – and reclaim the lead or extend – to whatever Newcastle do the night before.
It goes without saying the expectation; most definitely the hope at least, will be for a positive result. But will this happen? We’ll find out soon enough.
