Paul Smith today insisted Forest still have the League One title in their sights – despite Tuesday’s demoralising draw with Blackpool.

The Reds missed the opportunity to move into the top two with a controversial 1-1 draw at the City Ground.

Victory would have seen them leapfrog Oldham and stay ahead of Yeovil.

Smith admitted they had blown a major chance to climb into the automatic promotion places.

But even though they remain fourth and sit seven points behind leaders Scunthorpe, he is convinced Forest can still top the table come the end of the season.

He said: ‘We are definitely still thinking about the title. We’ve got plenty of points to play for and there’s no reason why we can’t do it.’

Tuesday’s draw, after Blackpool equalised with a hotly disputed late penalty, continued a disappointing run of form that has seen Forest win only two of their last eight games in League One.

But it was still enough to see them cut the gap on second place, which is now down to just one point.

But Smith admits Forest missed a big chance to take advantage of Oldham’s second consecutive defeat.

‘We’re disappointed because of other results and we feel it was three points that we should have got,’ he said.

‘But it was not for the want of trying and with the way we played we will have a good chance of getting into the top two places.

‘There’s only a point between us and Oldham so we are well within touching distance and there is no reason why we can’t string a few results together and get into the top two.’

Forest visit Chesterfield on Saturday having won just once in their last nine away matches in the league. Smith says putting an end to that run will be crucial to their hopes.
