Former Nottingham Forest striker Robert Earnshaw believes that the Reds deserve a shot at promotion this season.

Sabri Lamouchi’s side are having a strong campaign and the Frenchman has guided us to fifth in the table, with a real possibility for us to move up to the Premier League for the first time since 1999.

We are 10 points behind West Bromwich Albion in the table with nine games to play and are five points in front of Bristol City who sit just outside the Play-off places.

However, the season has been brought to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic, which, according to medical experts, is yet to peak in the UK.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Earnshaw believes Forest have earned their stripes this season and should be given the opportunity to finish the job that they started.

Do you think Forest's games will be played behind closed doors?

“Whenever the season gets going again, it will take a monumental effort from Forest to break into that top two but the play-offs are absolutely achievable”, he said.

“They have been there or thereabouts for the majority of the season so they certainly deserve to finish in the top six at the very least.

“It will be tough for the players when they come back from such a long break but they will just need to try and reset for one last push.”

The Welshman helped us react the Play-offs in both 2010 and 2011 but we failed to capitalise on the opportunity for promotion. He went on to score 43 goals and provided five assists in 110 appearances over the course of three seasons at the City Ground.

Of course, we have to appreciate that football cannot take place until it is safe and suitable to do so. Hopefully, we will be given the go-ahead to open up stadiums for spectators across the country.

With this in mind, I do agree with Earnshaw on the fact that we deserve a shot at promotion this season. We have performed better than we have for a long time in the Championship and it is only right that the season is completed to decide our fate for the next campaign.
