Opinion: Why Martin O’Neill isn’t hijacking Derby’s deal for Efe Ambrose

|

According to Nottinghamshire Live, Derby County are set to sign Efe Ambrose on a short-term deal until the end of the season – a player who was on the radar of Nottingham Forest during the January transfer window.

The 30-year-old is currently a free agent after being released by Hibernian last month, but it doesn’t appear Forest will make a move as Martin O’Neill managed to sign two central defenders in Molla Wague and Alexander Milosevic before the window shut.

Derby didn’t have as much luck in recruiting centre-backs before the 11pm deadline, but they can bring in free transfers for another few weeks. Ambrose wouldn’t have been a bad option for Forest either.

The Nigerian international has led a nomadic career, playing for the likes of Kaduna United, Bayelsa, FC Ashdod, Celtic and Hibs. Ambrose made his most appearances for Celtic, featuring 169 times over five years, winning four Premiership titles, one Scottish Cup and one Scottish League Cup.

Forest have a lot of centre-backs in the first-team (Wague, Milosevic, Michael Dawson, Tobias Figueiredo, Yohan Benalouane, Michael Hefele), so Ambrose shouldn’t be needed at the City Ground.
