Opinion: Nottingham Forest should sign £2m Peterborough man if 22-year-old leaves

With Evangelos Marinakis looking to sell Joao Carvalho to raise funds for a summer spending spree, Nottingham Forest will need to find a replacement that doesn’t break the bank. The Reds paid £13m for Carvalho in 2018 and are now said to be looking for £15m. If the 22-year-old departs the City Ground this summer, Marcus Maddison could be a good replacement.

Forest were linked with a move for the Peterborough United midfielder in 2018 but no deal materialised. Maddison has been in fantastic form 12 months on – scoring (10) and creating (23) 33 goals in 46 games in all competitions – and could be open to move after his side missed out on the playoffs. The Posh appeared to be considering selling Maddison a year ago.

The 25-year-old has a £2m release clause and only one year left on his deal at London Road, so United might have to cash in on the attacking-midfielder rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2020. Forest could land themselves a prolific playmaker for very little money, but they may not be the only side interested. Maddison’s form is sure to attract suitors this summer.
