Nottingham Forest have already secured eight additions in the summer transfer window, and according to recent reports, it appears that the Reds are eager to acquire their ninth signing. Benfica’s Bruno Varela could be the next player on the way to the City Ground, but do Forest need him?

According to the Nottingham Post, Nottingham Forest are interested in signing Bruno Varela from Benfica who is reportedly available for a fee of £15M. The Reds are not alone in their interest for the Portuguese goalkeeper who has also attracted interest from Watford and Newcastle United. While Varela is a talented goalkeeper, who exhibits great promise, yet should Forest focus their attention elsewhere?

Having confirmed the arrival of Costel Pantilmon, who performed commendably while on loan during the second-half of last season, it appears somewhat inessential and illogical for Forest to acquire the services of another goalkeeper, especially one who commands a fee of £15M.

To their credit, Nottingham Forest have been superb in the transfer market to date. Aitor Karanka has successfully identified areas of his team that were in need of substantial refinement, and he has acted accordingly to enhance the options at his disposal.

The arrivals of Dias, Carvalho and Goncalves will augment the side’s creativity and increase their attacking threat. The presence of Soudani should provide the Reds with a talented centre-forward, capable of finding the back of the net on a continuous basis. Michael Dawson and Jack Robinson will help assert what was a feeble defensive unit last season.

When considering all this, it’s clear that Forest have performed admirably in the window, but to spend £15M on a goalkeeper they do not need is simply frivolous. Varela is undoubtedly a talented player, yet, presently, he shouldn’t be Forest’s priority.
