The Record newspaper in Portugal reported on Monday that the club were pursuing Benfica goalkeeper Bruno Varela.
With it being announced on Tuesday afternoon that we had secured Costel Pantilimon on a permanent deal, it seemed we had already secured the services of our new number one for next season.
Still, the link to Varela was an intriguing one. He was Benfica’s first choice last season, and at 23 years of age, he has a promising future ahead of him in the game.
Newcastle and Watford are also said to be keen on the keeper, but with the player’s price tag being £15m, it would likely mean we’d have to break our transfer record for the second time this summer.
That seemed pretty unlikely, but I decided to put it to a vote among supporters. As you can see, most didn’t see the logic of us pursuing Varela now Pantilimon is at the club:
I also seriously doubt we will make any bids for another goalkeeper this summer but what do you think? Is Varela someone we should go after? Let me know in the comments.
