Reds midfielder John Thompson says the manager has brought an air of harmony to the City Ground after the turbulent years under Joe Kinnear and Gary Megson.

He believes Calderwood has built a rapport with the players – adding that the atmosphere within the club is at its best since Paul Hart departed in 2004.

He said: ‘He’s instilled a lot of confidence in the squad and the players have really responded to him.

‘It’s just a nice place to be again, whereas it hasn’t been in maybe a year or two. The players are coming in and looking forward to training.’

Thompson believes that at 41, Calderwood’s age has helped him interact with the players.

‘He treats the players with a lot of respect and maybe listens to them more than other managers have.’

Thompson has risen through the ranks as a trainee at Forest and is as qualified as anyone to talk about the changing moods at the club.
