Some might view this as the one that got away, whereas I think this is a lucky escape for Nottingham Forest.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Marcus Edwards has completed a move to Portuguese side Vitoria. What does this have to do with Forest? I’m glad you asked.

According to a report from The Athletic, Nottingham Forest were reportedly interested in making a move for the 20-year-old in the summer along with Brentford and Middlesbrough, however none of the sides were able to get the move over the line. I personally think that it was good that Forest didn’t manage to get this deal done, because I don’t think this would have been a good move for the club.

Of his 16 goals and 16 assists, only two of them have come at senior level, whilst he was playing for Excelsior Rotterdam in the Eredivisie. Edwards can play in a variety of positions in attack, but has predominantly spent his career playing out on the right-wing, a position that Forest are well-stocked at the moment.

Albert Adomah has provided three goals and two assists and according to reports has been a crucial part of the squad off the pitch as well. And whilst he can also play as a central attacking midfielder, he was never going to replace the likes of Joao Carvalho in the middle of park after his performances last season. When you consider the start that the Nottingham Forest have made this season, and their current unbeaten run, you can’t see where the signing of Marcus Edwards would be considered an ‘upgrade’ to what they’ve got already.

With Sabri Lamouchi being a new manager, I’m not sure he would have wanted to take a risk on someone with so little first-team experience, especially given the amount of turnover in the dugout that the club have gone through in recent years. Easier to be safe in your job with players you can trust rather than wasting your time developing someone.
