Explained: Why Nottingham Forest missed out on signing Alan Hutton

|

Nottingham Forest were showing interest in Alan Hutton over the summer following his release from Aston Villa, but they failed to land his signature and instead opted for Carl Jenkinson.

The Reds were on the hunt for a new right-back after Sam Byram joined Norwich City and Tendayi Darikwa picked up an injury, but it appears Hutton wasn’t keen on being away from his family and preferred a move closer to home in Scotland.

He told BBC Scotland: “I have had offers from Championship clubs but it’s a difficult one. They were quite far away and at my age I don’t want to be away from the family six nights a week. There’s been nothing from Scotland. I’d listen to all offers. If that was to move back home, that would be a possibility.”

Hutton joined Forest on loan in 2012/13 and made seven appearances in all competitions. The Reds were hoping to bring him back to the City Ground, but it seems he wants a return to Scotland. The 34-year-old’s in the eve of his career and will likely sign just one more deal before retirement, so he has to make sure it’s right for him.

Forest may have missed out on Hutton, but they’ve enjoyed a bright start to the season regardless. The Reds are currently 10th in the Championship and enjoying a five-game unbeaten run, while Jenkinson & Matty Cash have shared responsibilities at right-back without an issue.
