Paul McKenna was booed by sections of the home fans when he was substituted at the weekend and Billy Davies has warned of the reaction this ‘might’ bring.

Davies knows, as he told The Nottingham Post, that fans pay their money so have a right to voice their opinion although he has warned that the reaction given might not necessarily be a positive one as a result: ‘If the Forest fans are proud of that then good luck to them, they can boo who they like. They pay their money, they can do what they like.

‘All that happens is that they get a reputation and they get either a great reaction from their loyal players or they get a different reaction.

‘It is up to them. McKenna hadn’t trained all week, he was not fully fit. But he is a very experienced, important player.

‘If that is the way we treat our players then there is nothing we can do about it. The supporters pay their money.’

The Forest captain had not trained all week and was doubtful before the game, and with hindsight maybe he should not have played – although it was McKenna’s importance that saw him included in the end, clearly Davies still was not happy with his treatment though: ‘It was a gamble to play him, absolutely, because we knew he wasn’t fit.

‘When you play with the Cohen’s, the Moussi’s and the Majewski’s, you are talking about players who still have a lot to learn position-wise.

‘McKenna has a lot of knowhow when it comes to that, so he is important.

‘Good luck to the fans, though. If that is how they want to treat the players then all the best to them.’

Do you think that Paul McKenna deserved the jeers that he received, were you one of them doing this? Do you believe in booing your own players anyway?

  • Don’t blame us then…blame ND and the AP for not getting players in that would give him the rest he needed…and yourself for being so blind that you cannot see that with Mousey in the side rather than McKenna we are a better team!!!
Having said that…you are right…I personally do not condone booing and nor do the majority of fans…but it is an indication of whats to come I fear if we stagnate as we look to be doing!!

  • I thought that most of the sound was the ‘Mooo’ for Moussi coming on! If a player is having a bad time people usually give a cheer of relief at the substitution . I don’t think the sound from most of the fans was directed at McKenna at all.

  • Well Derbyred you are wrong there as it was McGugan who replaced him not Moussi. Anyway he has had to poor games on the trot and we looked a better side when he was off the pitch.

  • Sorry jhowes I do apologise you are correct. I feel like the shepherd on the Specsavers advert !! (senior moment!) Must be from living with sheep all around me!

  • It’s pointless booing Macca, he didn’t pick the team!! Yes we all have an opinion on who should or shouldn’t play, but booing the team or player is counter productive. There are other ways to vent frustration, and it needs to be vented at the culprits….ie ND, MA and the feckin AP!!!
