18-year-old prospect set for talks with club after recent performances – Report

|

Looks like we’re onto something special here boys and girls.

Brennan Johnson has burst onto the scene somewhat this year, both with his performances for club and most recently for his country.

When you start talking about a tug-of-war over his services at international level, you know you might just have some talent on your hands. You’ve even got fans of the Welsh national team demanding that he be capped as soon as possible for the senior side to avoid possibly losing him to England somewhere down the road.

I have spoken before, and subsequently raised the question about what his role at the club should be in the short term, and if he should be given more minutes for the club going forward. However, it looks as if the hierarchy at Nottingham Forest have already got plans for the young man, although they are looking more for the long term that the immediate future.

According to reports in The Telegraph, Forest have begun talks about a possible long-term contract at the City Ground for the 18-year-old, which I can only describe as excellent news in my opinion.

Speaking after the Carabao Cup game against Fleetwood earlier in the season, Johnson spoke about the faith that new boss Sabri Lamouchi has shown in the side’s academy players.

“The coach keeps showing faith in me, putting me in the squad and on the bench and this keeps me working hard and staying motivated. As soon as the new coach came in you could see he had faith in the youth.”

And there can be no greater sign in the faith that Lamouchi has in Johnson than by giving him the reported long-term contract. I’ve said that I think Johnson has the ability to make the step up to the first team this season, and if these reports are to be believed then it looks as if we’ll be seeing him in the first team for a long time to come.

I just hope that it isn’t just Johnson that starts catching the bosses eye, and that there’s many more of them in the pipeline for us to enjoy in the future.

What about you? Do you think that a long-term deal is warranted at this stage of his career? Or would you rather see a little bit more development in his game before we start talking about a new contract?
