What Nottingham has to offer

Nottingham is one of 16 cities currently vying to be one of the final 12 selected as host cities for England’s world cup bid, but what does it have to offer?

We find out, as we ask guinless what he thinks it can bring to the table for the world cup bid…

1) Nottingham has applied to be a host city, what are the pros of this?
Millions will be pumped into the local economy and it will give the highest of high profiles for the City.

2) And the cons?
How much will this 3-5 game extravaganza cost local tax payers? The unavoidable high security that comes with such an event, will probably have an adverse affect on the City.

3) Is The City Ground up to the task of staging a world cup game at the moment – if not will it come 2018/2022?
No. At least not according to current FIFA regulations. A stadium of 45,000 is required and if reports are to be believed, it’s impractical to redevelop the City Ground. A new stadium is planned, on the outskirts of the City at Gamston, which will also become the home of ladies football in England. Don’t laugh!

4) What is Nottingham most famous for?
You mean apart from Nottingham Forest? We’ve got more women than you can shake a stick at….apparently. Nightlife, booze, fine dining, theatres, women, Robin Hood, Sue Pollard, Byron, Sven Goran Eriksson, more women (probably for Sven), bars, nightclubs, Nottingham Castle, Players cigarettes, Raleigh bicycles and much much more. In fact, everything any self respecting World Cup venue needs.

5) What would it mean to you to see the world cup converge on Nottingham if successful?
The benefits to the City, would probably outweigh the cons. As long as it doesn’t cost us an arm and a leg, it can only be a good thing. It would mean NFFC losing their ancestral home, which to some folks makes it a bad thing.

6) Come on, hand on heart, tinted specs off, totally unbiased view will Nottingham be successful with the host city bid?
The City and County Councils are at loggerheads, with the County being dead against it. That puts us at a distinct disadvantage, so on that basis, I’d have to say no.

7) Most importantly, do you think that England will be successful with the 2018/2022 world cup bid anyway?
At this moment in time, yes.
