July 1999 was the month in which Nottingham Forest appointed David Platt as player manager, he was a manager who tried to buy his way to the Premiership but unfortunately could not tell his Beckhams from his Eadens. Platt spent £4.8m on Gianluca Petrachi and Salvatore Matrecano from Sampdoria which pretty much summed up his dealings in the transfer market.

Many would say the demise of Nottingham Forest started with David Platt but it is still continuing with the likes of Joe Kinnear and Gary Megson being appointed to try and stop the rot but of course they could not do so. So where do we go from here?

Well for me there is one manager who could sort this club out and that is ex. Republic Of Ireland and Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy. His time with Sunderland ended unfairly in my opinion, the problem did not lie with him but the man above called Bob Murray who did not provide enough funds for Sunderland to stand any chance of surviving.

He was appointed when Howard Wilkinson got the sack and it was always going to take a mirracle to keep them in The Premiership, your Alex Fergusons and even Houdini would have struggled to keep them up. The next season he led Sunderland to the play-offs where they were losers in a penalty shoot-out against eventual winners Crystal Palace which meant they missed out on a chance to play in the play-off final, a cruel way to end to the season.

The 2004/2005 campaign saw Sunderland finish the season as Champions and earn themselves promotion back to the Premiership, his side were resolute and played decent football. During his time with Sunderland he made some fantastic signings (and a fair few shockers to be fair!) from the lower leagues with the likes of Liam Lawrence joining from Mansfield Town and also Dean Whitehead arriving from Oxford, who has recently attracted interest from Liverpool.

Many would say his transfer dealings for Sunderland in the Premiership were poor with Jon Stead and Andy Gray in particular not really performing as well as expected but every manager will have suspect signings it?s the same for Alex Ferguson and Jose Mourhino but McCarthy did not have the money to go out and sign real quality. Mick has an eye for a bargain, he also picked up a unknown Irish striker for £125,000 from Manchester City and he managed to score 16 goals during the promotion campaign in the Championship.

Roy Keane, Dave Penney and Nigel Clough forget them there is a manager waiting who knows the lower leagues and will get Nottingham Forest playing good football but more importantly earning results, of course I can not see in to the future but this is a manager who?s been there and done that but is very much different from Gary Megson. IF Mick McCarthy were to become manager and lead us back to The Championship and even the Premiership with a good backing for both signing players and paying there wages, he could be a very successful manager.
