Vale to appeal

Port Vale manager Martin Foyle intends to appeal the red card shown to goalscorer Michael Husbands in the 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest.

Husbands had given Vale a dream start with a goal inside 13 seconds, but later saw red for a challenge on James Perch.

In-between times, Ian Breckin had levelled for the visitors and Foyle, whilst happy with the performance, was unhappy with the red card decision by Shropshire official Rob Lewis.

He said: ‘It was never a sending off. Michael has gone in for the ball, Perch has jumped out of the tackle and there was nothing in it.

‘I’ve been to see the referee and he told me to shut the door. He had that air of arrogance you tend to get from Premiership officials.

‘I’m proud of my players tonight. The reaction I got after a poor performance on Saturday was brilliant.

‘We have a method of playing which means we have to be 100% at it to get results. We have to really work hard and I have no complaints on that front tonight.’

Forest boss Colin Calderwood was pleased with the way his side bounced back from the early setback.

He said: ‘Vale had obviously lost a little bit of confidence of late and we had spoken about not giving them a let-up, so to concede in seconds was not what we intended.

‘What pleased me after that was the air of calmness we showed in our play. We took the sting out of Vale, scored the equaliser and then started to play very well.

‘We were very strong in the second half, even before the sending off, and there only looked like there was going to be one winner.

‘But we have won games we could easily have drawn this season so these things tend to even themselves out over the season.

‘I was at the wrong angle to judge if it was a sending off or not, but the referee was perfectly placed and he had no hesitation. My gut feeling is it was a bad challenge.’
