Things Can Only Get Better

Colin Calderwood today praised his Forest side for their best performance under his tenure – but warned the rest of League One: ‘We can still improve.’

The Reds brought an emphatic end to their run of four matches without a win, as a spectacular fight-back saw them hammer promotion rivals Swansea 3-1. Speaking to the NEP, Calderwood said the second-half performance was the best of his time, as goals from James Perch, Kris Commons and Junior Agogo ensured Forest stayed top of the table. But he believes they can still improve – and they will be working on how this week.

He said, ‘If you win the second half of football matches, you will always have a chance of getting something out of the game and we have won the second half of this match, which took us from being behind to being ahead, which is great. It was important because it was Swansea, who we expect to be one of our rivals, and it was important because we had gone four games without a win.

‘It was important because we scored goals and because we scored three of them. There are little factors though, things we have to improve if we want to remain top of the league.

‘Where we were at half-time to where we were at the end was quite a distance. I wasn’t too concerned because I knew the players could do something to lift the fans in the stands. but I also knew that the fans would stick behind us.’

He added, ‘I don’t think I could be more pleased with the fact that we won the game, but I was delighted with the manner in which we did it. We had the momentum and we were impossible to stop. I couldn’t say that we have played any better.’

Before this performance, Forest had netted only once in their previous four games.

Calderwood said, ‘It is one of those stats, but the performances have been OK. People who have watched us will know that we have crafted opportunities, we have had shots on goal.

‘Kris was good, he will improve us, his fitness will improve. When he gets the ball in and around the box, you know – off his left or his right foot – he is going to get a shot off or produce a cross.’
