Portuguese tabloid Record is reporting that we did make a last-ditch attempt to sign Braga midfielder Nikola Vukcevic before he opted to join La Liga side Levante.

The newspaper reports that we offered a “quite attractive” deal to the Montenegrin international but the player was more interested in moving to the Spanish League.

Vukcevic wanted a move away from Braga this summer at all costs after being promised by the Portuguese side that he would be allowed to leave.

A €8.5m (£7.5m) move to Levante has now been confirmed with the player having signed for the Spanish side today.

Record were not the only paper who’ve reported our interest in Vukcevic with A Bola also believing we were tracking the 26-year-old. Whether this was the “surprise” signing Aitor Karanka had been speaking about in recent days, it is not known.

In any case, the club have had a very productive summer in the transfer market, and we should be happy with the business we’ve done.
