The News of the World today reports that former Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill is being lined up to take over at the City Ground, when Billy Davies leaves.

Rumour and speculation about the future of Davies is rife at the moment, with talk of his well documented disagreements with the board beginning to surface again. With only the 6 month loan signing of Chelsea left back Ryan Bertrand to show for a summer of transfer activity (or the lack of it), Davies is reportedly decidedly miffed at the lack of signings.

The paper says he’s being lined up along with John Robertson, who partnered him at Villa. Both are of course former City Ground heroes and would be welcomed back with open arms, but the paper also says we play at the County Ground, so maybe a pinch of salt is required before Billy packs his bags.

  • interesting one that, might be like ‘going home’ to MON? One last challenge before retirement maybe. Hated the style of play at Villa and the way he quit though. OTher rumour is he is in line for the England job. An Irishman leading out England? Can’t see it myself!

  • Rubbish!!! MON left Villa cos they wouldn’t spend, and kept selling. So he certainly won’t be arriving at the CG anytime soon!!

  • I guess that’s one way to get rid of David Pleat lol. MON would likely slit Pleat’s throat in his bed while he slept. He turned down the job when Doughty DID have money to spend. Why on earth would he want to come here only to bash his head against a new wall.

  • Villa woudln’t spend? We spent 120m under him, half his players ended up on the bench or on loan on big wages.

  • The first thing I thought was, there can’t be much news around.
Sadly there is, and newspapers waste their print on THIS!

  • Not a chance in a million years with our chairman’s’ empty pockets.

He has blotted his copybook somewhat when he has a few quid to spend anyway with some of the donkeys he has bought. Tho would be nice to see the Villa struggle this year 😀
