Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has said that the club are taking a “big gamble” to gain promotion by heavily investing in the playing squad.

Speaking on Sky Sports News today (quotes via the Nottingham Post), the former Arsenal midfielder also predicted that our away trip to face Wigan will end in a draw:

“I’ve gone for a draw, 1-1. They’ve (Wigan) bought top heavy, they’ve bought some good forwards have Wigan and they’ll have a go. I’m a big fan of the manager there (Paul Cook) and they play the right way. Forest are having a big gamble, I fear, they’re going to get up. They rested 11 players in midweek and I think this will be a real good game and it’ll be a hard game for Forest.”

With Aitor Karanka in charge, the investment in the team is a lot less of a risk, in my opinion. The Spaniard knows how to get out of this division, and if he thinks he has the squad good enough to sustain a push for promotion then I’m inclined to trust him.

In regards to tomorrow’s game at the DW Stadium, the Latics have been leaking goals, with two conceded on the opening day against Sheffield Wednesday, three against Villa last weekend, and another three in the defeat to Rotherham in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.

With our solid backline, if we can keep things tight, we should be able to take advantage. Do you think the club have invested wisely this summer? Let me know in the poll:
