Credit to Aitor, we`ve got a much stronger looking squad than we did a few weeks ago before his mass overhaul.

I was concerned at first that they`d take too long to gel and that we`d end up in a relegation fight but I`ve seen enough from us that that won`t be the case.

We`re by no means perfect, but we won`t be going down this season that is for sure and we should only improve, especially when we add further in the summer.

I`m excited already to see who`s going to arrive, with the owners making all the right noises about investment, but I`m also intrigued to see if we make a play for Kieran Dowell.

When we snapped him up last summer I thought he looked like a top prospect. Indeed, under Warbs he was arguably one of our best players with several goals and assists coming from in behind whoever the main striker was.

Under Aitor, though, he`s lost his way a bit and Lee Tomlin`s arrival and impressive start has seen him demoted to a squad player from being one of the key men.

Certainly, it`s apparent to me that the boss doesn`t want to rely on youth as heavily as Warburton and I can understand that – we certainly needed more experience.

I do think, however, there is still room for Dowell and that we shouldn`t just discard him completely. He`s only a young player, he`s going to have ups and downs and, in truth, this is his first off-period over a prolonged spell this season.

I still think he`s a class talent and, under the guidance of Karanka and surrounded by more experience, I think he could really flourish.
Everton, of course, might have other plans for him but, if possible, I`d like to have him around next season, too.

Would you like Dowell in a red shirt next year? Let me know in the poll!

  • I’m at 50/50 now with Dowell – he looked a class act when he first came
with his goals – his inter-passing and creativity but when we was getting
thumped and bullied he was no-where around and quite a few times
    now he’s gone missing.
I think he’s good on the ball but can get out muscled – his biggest weakness
(of course) is – he hasn’t got a tackle in him.
If he goes back to the Toffees and gets into their first team other Premiership
sides are going to suss him very quickly and mark him out of the game.

I’m glad we took his loan up to the end of the season because we are seeing
a different side to his game. Before Christmas I’d have had no hesitation in
bringing the lad in permanently but not so sure now we have the seasoned
pro’s in the midfield that Aitor has brought in. With not much fight in the lad
I can’t see him fitting into Aitor Karanka’s plans.

  • Dowell is a bit of a luxury player. He can get you a goal but gives the ball away a lot and doesn’t have the work rate of others. Given Dowell probably not cheap nor low wages, we would be better looking to take Tomlin off Cardiff’s hands on a permanent deal. We finally seem to have a creative goalscoring midfielder again in the mould of reidy / radi / mcgugan.

I hope we keep Worrall and he gets the chance to build an understanding with a better centre back partner. Pantillimon will be very good for him too. I’m not sure I’d look to sell our younger players although Walker has to be a question mark, and I’d imagine Smith should go out on loan to get game time as he looks to be third choice and he’s too good to bench warm. The 2 bens, cash and worrall are worth their place. However we are seriously overstaffed in midfield now so I can see Vaughan and Bridcutt moving on. I’d like to see Clough get another shot at the team. I think he is a decent alternative when Tomlin tires.
