Aitor Karanka might be considering a return for Kieran Dowell, after the midfielder revealed his situation at Everton is “frustrating”. Dowell spoke to the Liverpool Echo about his lack of playing time this season and admitted that he’s desperate for more minutes on the pitch.

He said: “Yeah, that’s been the frustrating thing at the moment – not getting as much game time. It’s nice to get the kit on and get on the pitch at Goodison as well. It was good. I still haven’t got that first competitive (goal) for Everton but it’s always nice to score in front of a good turn out.”

The 21-year-old scored and created 15 goals in 43 appearances in all competitions for Nottingham Forest on loan last season and returned to Goodison Park with a view to attaining a place in the first-team squad. However, Dowell has been handed only two senior appearances this season, none of which have been in the Premier League.

Dowell rose through the Everton youth ranks to the first-team in 2017 but he’s had to be patient for opportunities. He’ll know how important competitive football is to his development, so could he consider joining another side on loan in January?

Forest certainly got the best from him, but there’s no guarantee they’ll make an approach when the winter transfer window opens, as João Carvalho appears to have the position sewn up. Karanka’s men are currently sixth in the Championship with 26 points from 16 games this season too, coming off the back of three wins and a draw from their last five. Things are going well at the City Ground.
