Benfica goalkeeper Bruno Varela is “eager to leave” the Estadio Da Luz before the end of the month, according to Record.

The Portuguese newspaper reports that we have previously made an offer for the 23-year-old but the bid was rejected, leaving the player as third choice at his current club.

Varela is believed to want game time and would like to move on before August 31st. However, it’s unlikely that he’ll be arriving at the City Ground with Costel Pantilimon established as the club’s number one.

The fact that Luke Steele also arrived in the summer means Aitor Karanka already has enough options in goal to choose from. That may change if Jordan Smith was allowed to leave.

The former no.1 was sent off against Bury in the Carabao Cup last week and was heavily criticised for his performance. Yet, there hasn’t been any talk about the 23-year-old’s departure so I think it is safe to say that any move for Varela is a non-starter.
