UEFA have made an announcement that will have an effect on Nottingham Forest’s season.

The Reds are currently fifth in the Championship table, 11 points behind league leaders Leeds United, and five points ahead of Bristol City who sit just outside the Play-off places.

Two decisions have taken place. The first one is that UEFA’s flagship national competition Euro 2020 will be postponed for 12 months due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, which is good news for Sabri Lamouchi’s side.

Secondly, the European governing body has given a deadline of June 30th for all of our outstanding fixtures to be played in the 2019/20 season. There are nine games left for Forest to play and are still within a shout of automatic promotion.

This will depend on whether or not the illness has eased or spread further, as UEFA announced on their official website on the postponement of the Euros that they have set up a working group with each league and representative to “examine calendar solutions”.

Ian Dennis from BBC Sport said that members of all top six Championship clubs met on Monday and unanimously voted on seeing the season played out in its entirety before the start of the 2020/21 campaign. He was later informed that the rest of the teams in the division also agreed with this stance.

Not only does this give Forest hope after a recent run of poor results, but there is a chance that we will have some key players to the side. Samba Sow has been so important to us and has been badly missed in recent weeks as he continues his recovery from a knee injury.

Tiago Silva is another man who could return and make the difference for Lamouchi after suffering appendicitis. After a string of good performances, the City Ground will be reassured when he returns.

Time will tell whether or not the season will continue on the EFL’s advised date of April 3rd. However, this is good news that will give Forest a huge boost.
