Report: This player should feel harshly treated after club makes this decision over his future

I guess his best just wasn’t good enough.

Having arrived in the summer on a season-long loan deal, it appears as though Alfa Semedo won’t be sticking around to make it two seasons at the City Ground.

According to a report from Portuguese outlet Record, the club will not be taking up the option of extending his loan or making the deal permanent and he will return to his parent club Benfica when the season comes to an end, whenever that may turn out to be.

I think that Semedo can find himself somewhat disappointed to find himself surplus to requirements at the end of the season. The fact is that he’s just been a victim of Sabri Lamouchi’s constant desire to rotate his side over the course of the season, with him very rarely naming an unchanged side. As a result, he’s found himself bouncing in and out of the squad, starting 10 games and coming off the bench in 12 of them, which has potentially played a part in him only being able to put up an average Whoscored rating of 6.44.

Should Semedo feel harshly treated over this?

It can’t be easy to make a big impression on someone when you are being jostled about in that manner. It’s a little bit more of a kick in the teeth when you consider that 34-year-old Ben Watson is coming to the end of his contract at the end of the season, so it’s more than likely that there’s going to be a spot in defensive midfield up for grabs.

It’s also slightly harsh to make this decision at this stage of the season considering that we still have nine games and a potential playoff run for him to make his case to stay. Who knows, he may have put in some great performances to make Lamouchi think he can build a team around him next season.

Overall, it’s a bit of a risky call from the Frenchman, let’s just hope it’s the right one.
