Nottingham Forest are targeting a move to re-sign midfielder Jack Colback following his release from Newcastle, a report from The Athletic has claimed.

Colback spent a year-and-a-half on loan at Forest from Newcastle between January 2018 and June 2019, during which time the midfielder made 55 appearances in all competitions for the club.

The one-time England Under 20 youth international impressed during his stint with Forest, but there would be no permanent move materialising following the end of that spell at The City Ground.

However that could now be set to change, with Colback currently a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Newcastle at the end of last season.

According to the latest reports, Forest are now lining up a move to sign the 30-year-old, as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of what they will surely expect to be another push for promotion next season.

This is certainly an interesting one for Forest to consider as they look ahead to the new campaign.

Colback is a cheap option now that he is no longer contracted to Newcastle, and he was a useful asset for Forest during his last spell with the club.

Indeed, those past links with Forest could sway things in the club’s favour when Colback comes to make his decision, and this certainly wouldn’t be the most unpopular signing the club could complete by any stretch.

However, it is worth noting that Colback didn’t play a single senior game for Newcastle last season, meaning he is unlikely to be match fit going into yet is going to be another heavy schedule in the coming campaign.

You do have to wonder therefore, just how much he is going to be able to contribute to Forest over the coming months if he does make this move, particularly in the early exchanges of the season.
