Nottingham Forest’s promotion push looks set to continue as FIFA are preparing to confirm a full indefinite extension to the current 2019/20 campaign, according to reports.

Championship football has been brought to a halt due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Medical experts have suggested that the illness has yet to peak in the UK, which could further delay any planned returns to football.

According to The Athletic, the current campaign will not have a deadline for its completion. This will also alter the dates of the upcoming summer transfer window and the start of 2020/21 season, breaking free of the traditional August to May format.

Euro 2020 has also been postponed due to the virus, leaving space for football to be played over the warmer months if it is safe to do so.

If the report is true, this means that we will be able to complete our last nine games of the campaign. We currently sit fifth in the Championship standings, 10 points behind West Bromwich Albion in the automatic promotion places and five points ahead of Bristol City outside of the Play-off places.

This will also mean that FIFA’s new approach will prioritise England’s second-tier league to be completed alongside the Premier League. Although no deals concerning television revenue have been agreed or distributed at this time.

It remains to be seen how the EFL will handle the Play-offs, whether they will all be played in one location or if they will take place at Wembley.

At the very least, the foundations have been laid for us to potentially finish the season, which is good for all of us.
