According to Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports News, Aitor Karanka could be returning to the Championship. The 45-year-old is ‘eager to talk’ to Huddersfield Town about their manager vacancy.

Karanka has been a free agent since leaving Nottingham Forest on January 11 and could face his former club on December 21, 2019 (John Smith’s Stadium) & March 18, 2020 (City Ground) if he gets the job.

The Spanish coach spent 12 months at Forest, racking up 52 games in charge and leading the club to 17th place in 2017/18. He’s also coached at Real Madrid (July 1, 2010 – July 15, 2013) and managed Middlesbrough (November 13, 2013 – March 16, 2017) too.

Jan Siewert was sacked by Huddersfield following the Terriers’ 2-1 defeat to Fulham on Friday. He picked up only one win from 19 games in charge and suffered relegation from the Premier League last season.

Mark Hudson is the current caretaker manager and could be allowed to take charge of three games before the second-tier outfit appoint their new boss. Karanka wants to be Siewert’s successor, but he has competition for the job from Hudson, Gary Rowett, John Eustace and Dan Petrescu.
