Priority is not a left back

Many people, it would seem, would have signing a left back as a ‘priority’ before the season kicks-off, or at least the transfer window closes?

Nigel Doughty, as he told The Evening Post, does not see it that way though: ‘I am sure if Ashley Cole became available, he might change his mind.

‘But I think we are focusing on wide midfield players at the moment.

‘It is really a question for Steve, but left-backs are the most difficult position to fill in football.

‘One in nine of the population are left-footed. But we have a number of people who can play there.’

In Joel Lynch and Chris Cohen, and even Chris Gunter and Kieron Freeman, he feels that that is enough cover: ‘Joel Lynch did well there last season, Chris Cohen can play there – and has done so in the Premier league with West Ham.

‘Chris Gunter has played there internationally with Wales and Kieron Freeman plays there in a very good Wales under-19 side.

‘We have some cover there. I know it is a heartfelt cause of our fans. But, given my previous comments, we have to be a little bit careful where we spend our money.’

Maybe he had a point?

Although – given the little I know about the subject to be honest, so it is tough to comment – it would ‘seem’ that others will not be so convinced…
