Pearce took over as U21 boss last year whilst still manager of Manchester City. He won himself few friends in the area when trying to merge the two rolls, especially when City had such a poor season, at least by their fans expectations.

Although Pearce still and always will have ‘legend’ status at the City Ground, in Manchester the feelings for our beloved Psycho are a little cooler. It was always going to be a difficult job to combine the roll of club and international boss and Pearce paid the price at the end of last season when he was sacked by City.

Pearce told Sky Sports in typical Psycho stylee, ‘It really excites me this job.’ He also added, ‘When I was asked to come in part-time in January it was a great honour and the main drive was the enjoyment I had over the six months and the bond with the players.’

Last month Pearce led the U21’s to the semi finals of the European Championships. He says his aim as the boss is to win the next tournament in 2009. Don’t bet against him achieving his goal.
