Opinion: Why Nottingham Forest should wait before making this contract decision

|

Sammy Ameobi wants to sign a new deal at Nottingham Forest after his bright start to life in the West Midlands, but the Reds would be smarter waiting for more of the season to unfold before making a decision on his future.

The 27-year-old joined on a free transfer from Bolton Wanderers and has gone on to score and create three goals in 17 appearances. Ameobi, who can operate on either flank and up front, is out of contract in 2020 and understandably wants to negotiate an extension while his stock is high.

As per WhoScored, he’s created 12 chances, whipped in 24 crosses, made 24 successful dribbles, had 23 shots, won 28 aerial duels and has averaged a tackle (14) or interception (5) every 49 minutes. There is an undercurrent of profligacy in Ameobi’s game, however.

On average, the former England u21 international creates one chance every 78 minutes, whips in one accurate cross every 234 minutes, wins only 44% of his aerial duels, has one shot on target every 104 minutes and only has a 54% dribble success rate.

Ameobi also has made 42 unsuccessful touches, has been dispossessed 32 times and completes only 72.1% of his passes. He’s also been substituted on or substituted off in 80% of his appearances, so Forest may be better off seeing how he’s performing in Spring before putting a new deal on the table.
