Opinion: Nottingham Forest to miss out on transfer-target after recent comments, major blow

|

Nottingham Forest have been dealt a major blow in their reported pursuit of Gavin Massey, with the Wigan Athletic winger expressing a desire to stay at the DW Stadium. Massey is out of contract this summer and was rumoured to be on his way out when Wigan were embroiled in a relegation battle.

Now the Latics are mathematically safe after back-to-back wins over Leeds United and Preston North End, Massey says he’s looking forward to signing a new deal. He told the Wigan Post: “Yeah, we are hoping to get something sorted.

“I know I’ve said this before but I do love being here at this club. I’ve built some good friendships up here, I live here now with my missus, and so it would be really ideal for me to stay here.” The 26-year-old has made 20 Championship appearances this season, scoring and creating six goals.

Massey struggled for playing time during the first-half of the campaign but is now a regular under Paul Cook, featuring in 12 of their last 14 league games. Wigan are currently 18th in the table and eight points clear of the drop zone with only six points available.

He added: “Obviously with the situation at the club – and us not knowing if we were coming or going – it wasn’t straight-forward. But now we know our destination is the Championship, hopefully (a new contract) can get sorted over the next few weeks.” Forest will have to turn their attentions elsewhere.

The Reds aren’t short on wingers (Matty Cash, Ben Osborn, Joe Lolley, Diogo Goncalves), but Goncalves is expected to return to Benfica after his failed loan spell and Lolley could leave if suitors make an offer Forest can’t refuse.
