Nottingham Forest wanted to sign Jack Colback last summer after his impressive stint on loan, but the Reds missed out on his signature as he wanted to fight for his place at Newcastle United. But after seeing Colback omitted from the Magpies’ Premier League squad this season, Forest could return for the 30-year-old in January.

Sabri Lamouchi isn’t short on midfielders – Ben Watson, Samba Sow, Alfa Semedo, Ryan Yates, John Bostock, Claudio Yacob – but Yacob could be offloaded as he’s been on the periphery in 2019/20. If one player leaves, Forest should bring in a like-for-like replacement to keep the squad strong in a key area.

Forest’s injury crisis in midfield left them short on options in the middle of the park, but Colback would be an improvement on Yacob and Bostock. He made 55 appearances in two loan spells at the City Ground, scoring and creating six goals, and was open to staying in the East Midlands before Rafael Benitez left Newcastle.

But now Colback hasn’t played a single minute of football for the Toon Army and is out of contract next summer. He should jump at the chance of re-joining Forest, even if it’s on loan, but it remains to be seen if the Reds will return for him in the coming weeks.
