Opinion: Nottingham Forest should not sign £23k-per-week Burnley man

|

Despite having Michael Dawson, Tobias Figueiredo, Yohan Benalouane, Alexander Milosevic, Michael Hefele, Jack Robinson and Joe Worrall at centre-back, Nottingham Forest are being linked with a move for Kevin Long. The 28-year-old has been on the periphery at Burnley ever since he joined in 2010, but it wouldn’t be wise to bring the £23k-per-week man to the City Ground.

Long has made only 62 appearances in all competitions for the Clarets in nine years and racked up 513 minutes of Premier League football last season. He’s never managed to hold down a starting place at Burnley and isn’t a left-footed central defender as Sabri Lamouchi has reportedly been requesting. Forest should avoid making a move for Long as a result.

Scott McKenna may be a better option for the Reds. The 22-year-old has been on the radar of the Reds’ manager and recently handed in a transfer request due to Aberdeen blocking him from leaving. Forest aren’t leading the race for his signature, but he would be better suited than Long as a left-footed centre-back.

Lamouchi may need to offload one or two names if he’s going to bring in another defender, however. Hefele has been made available for sale while Worrall has been recently linked with an exit, so time will tell which players are shown the door.
