Opinion: Nottingham Forest receive boost in pursuit of 24-year-old, O’Neill must pounce

|

Nottingham Forest were linked with Jamal Lowe throughout last season without ever lodging an official bid for the 24-year-old, but Martin O’Neill could consider pouncing this summer after Portsmouth News’ latest revelation. Reports suggest Lowe is unsettled at Portsmouth as the League One side keep rejecting bids from Wigan Athletic and Millwall.

Lowe, who joined Portsmouth from Hampton & Richmond Borough in 2017, was a standout performer for the South Coast club last season, contributing 24 goals in 45 games. The England C-team international now wants to test himself in the Championship after proving his worth in third tier. This is good news for Forest if they’re considering a move for the winger this summer.

O’Neill could axe Ben Osborn and Matty Cash from the starting eleven next season as the pair struggled for form in 2018/19. Since the turn of the year, Osborn and Cash scored only two goals and made three assists between them in the Championship. Lowe would be a considerable upgrade on the pair and could boost Forest’s fledgling hopes of a top-six finish in 2019/20.

If only Millwall and Wigan were targeting Lowe, the Reds would be favourites to land his signature. The 24-year-old could have a lot of interest this summer, however, which could make him a hard player to sign if Pompey continue to play hardball.
