Opinion: Nottm Forest man suffers devastating blow on loan, manager snub is nail in coffin

|

Luke Steele has spent the entirely of his stint at Millwall sitting on the bench, but the 35-year-old suffered a new devasting blow after being left out of the matchday squad against Leeds United over the weekend. Steele had been second-choice to goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski, but he’s now fallen behind Ryan Sandford in the pecking order.

There was no word from Millwall’s official website that suggested Steele was injured. Leeds haven’t made any mention about the shot-stopper in their pre-match preview either. Vital Forest already revealed why Steele’s loan could be cut short when Frank Fielding returns, but he’s now been dropped for a 20-year-old goalkeeper.

Steele’s made two appearances since joining Millwall on loan, both of which have come in the EFL Cup against West Bromwich Albion (August 13) and Oxford United (August 27). The Englishman had been an unused substitute in nine consecutive Championship games for the Lions, but now he can’t even make the bench.

Fielding’s return in the next few weeks would add competition for places too, so it’s hard to see the 35-year-old getting any opportunities. There’s little point in Steele staying at Millwall if he stands no chance of getting on the pitch, but time will tell if his loan will be cut short.
