One transfer that Karanka must make this summer

Lee Tomlin has been sensational since arriving on loan in January. Three goals and an assist in his last two games for us makes him Karanka`s best signing from the seven he made last month in my opinion.

The 29-year-old was however quick to point out on Twitter that his departure from parent club Cardiff was not due to a falling out with manager Neil Warnock, which means that it is still up for debate whether the player will leave the Bluebirds in the summer.

Although it`s not wise to get too carried away about our new No.15, there is an element of regret that we perhaps didn`t secure the forward with at least a purchase option to sign him permanently at the end of the season.

Most likely Cardiff were unwilling to accept such a deal, although Forest may have not even considered it in their negotiations at the time, we just don`t know. Still, now he is at the club, the manager must do all he can to secure him on a permanent basis.

We have struggled to score goals this campaign, but in the last couple of games at least, with Lee playing in the No.10 role or out wide, we now have a link up man that can really make the difference.

Certainly other January recruits like Joe Lolley have also improved our offensive play, but the lynchpin currently is Tomlin. We will have to see whether this form continues over the next few weeks and months as after all, he was on the periphery of Cardiff`s first team. However, I think there enough good indicators to suggest that he can make a lasting impact between now and the end of the season.

His career goal record suggests he won`t be always provide a regular supply of goals, but with his work rate and guile, he is likely to offer our team a regular supply of chances that others can take advantage of.

Combined with our gaffer`s expertise in setting up an organised defence, the signs are good that we can finish this season on a high, with marked improvements at both ends of the pitch. If we want to see this continue into next campaign however, we need to ensure we sign the former Bristol City star on a long-term contract.
