The dust has yet to settle on our promotion success and already the club is looking to the future, but should we be more concerned with the present and set our sights on something a little more realistic?

Forest Chairman Nigel Doughty has said he will not celebrate the fact that we’ve been promoted to the Championship and that the time for him to celebrate is when the club regains Premiership status. Hot on the heels of his comments, Colin Calderwood is already planning next seasons’ promotion campaign.

Now don’t get me wrong, I want to us progress and I want to see us playing at the highest level and mixing it with the ‘big guns.’ But is all this talk of the Premier League a little premature? We have every right to be celebrating this seasons’ success, but maybe we should get our feet back on the ground and not get too far ahead of ourselves. You can’t blame the club for talking things up, after all they have season tickets to sell and the more the merrier.

Speaking in today’s’ Daily Mirror, Calderwood says he is now looking towards his next promotion push and lining up his targets with the Rams’ Robert Earnshaw, numero uno on his list. ‘It’s going to be much easier to attract players now we’ve gone up. Robert Earnshaw is a proven goalscorer and the sort of player that we need to be competing for. The chairman and I sat down and discussed the budget quite a while ago. We had a Plan A and a Plan B – and we’ll certainly now enjoy Plan A!’

Maybe I should be the one accused of having a lack of ambition, a claim that’s been laid at those who run the club. Personally I’m still coming to terms with watching Championship footy next season, let alone getting promotion. Still, it makes for better reading than battling for relegation. Next stop, the Champions League. These are heady days, folks, heady days indeed.
