Martin O’Neill says Matty Cash had a “slight problem” which kept him out of Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with West Bromwich Albion and is “still feeling it” just days before the Reds lock horns with Preston North End.

The 21-year-old picked up the injury against Brentford on Saturday and has been out of action ever since. He’s doubtful ahead of the Preston meeting, but O’Neill is hoping having a couple more days to recover will do the trick.

Cash wouldn’t be starting against North End, but the Forest manager wants him back in the squad as soon as possible. The midfielder has been a regular this season, making 27 Championship appearances for both Aitor Karanka and O’Neill. He’d featuring in eight consecutive games until Forest’s 2-1 win over Brentford and is touch and go ahead of their weekend outing.

O’Neill told Nottinghamshire Live: “Cash went off in the game on Saturday with a slight problem and was still feeling it. Hopefully a couple more days might help him.” Joe Lolley and Ben Osborn should start on opposite flanks against Preston, with Jack Colback and maybe one of Adlene Guedioura or Claudio Yacob replacing the much-maligned Ben Watson in midfield.

Cash should at least be fit to face Derby County on February 25 if he can’t make it in time for Preston.
