The prolonged struggle at Nottingham Forest to find a solution to the vacant left back position looks set to rear it’s head again over the summer, if reports in today’s Sunday People are to be believed.

The paper says that the defender who is currently on loan with Forest from Liverpool, will be heading back to Fulham at the end of the season for as little as £1.5m. That’s a great piece of business for the London club, who sold him to the Scousers, for twice that amount only 7 months ago.

Konchesky will play his last game for Forest against Crystal Palace on the final day of the season, when his loan deal expires and will not be available for the Playoffs should we reach them. That will mean that we will have to rely on either Joel Lynch or Julian Bennett to fill the void.

Lynch has filled in at left back already this season, when he replaced Ryan Bertrand at the end of his loan spell from Chelsea. Whilst it has to be said that he did do OK, he is a centre half by trade and not an ideal long term prospect for the position. Julian Bennett has only played 13 minutes of football for us this season and prior to that, not at all in almost 2 years due to injury.

  • I doubt we’d have a chance to keep Konch unless we make the prem – cant blame the boy for that.

What does my head in is that all our rivals seem to have loans that last the whole season so why the chuffing heck have we got one that finishes before the playoffs? And why cant it be extended?

  • P.S. If things dont work out for Bertrand at Chelsea, I think he’d be a better bet to get on a permanent deal, much as I think Konch is good, Ryan gives more attacking options and will only improve with time.

  • I agree Husky – we should try and get Bertrand as he’s excellent and it would appear he’s behind Van Aanholt in the Chelsea pecking order. I doubt we’d be the only club in for him though.
Actually on your first point what annoys me is that our promotion rivals all seem to have half their first team on loan from the prem, and we struggle along with one..who can’t play in the play offs if we get there as you say!
