With finance in football as it is today due to Television money, the gulf between divisions continues to grow. What does this mean for fallen giants like ourselves and other clubs such as Leeds?

Does it mean we will be remembered for past achievements? Or will be able to reach those heights again? I`m not talking about European cups, we all know how far away that is, but is a return to the premiership further than we think?

The financial reward of playing in The Premiership is so high that the pressure for teams to get there continues to grow. This has led to a widening of the gap between the premiership and championship and the championship and league 1.

The championship now has half a dozen or more so called ‘big clubs` who are prepared to spend big in order to return to the premiership like Birmingham and Sunderland.

These along with teams such as West Brom, Wolves, Coventry, Southampton and Leicester are all pushing for a return. Add to this list West Ham who have big financial backing, I therefore ask the question could we realistically compete if we were to get promoted?

Obviously survival would be the first aim but a club of our status should be in the premiership! How many seasons would it take to get back to the big league?
Will financial restrictions once again hamper us? We cannot compete with the above teams financially and the only way we could would be if investment came.

This is hard to accept as we no fewer than 15 years ago we were one of the biggest teams in England. The importance of premiership football has done this to a club like ours and looks set to do the same to Leeds United. It looks likely that they will also have to endure the embarrassment of playing in the third tear of English football for the first time in their history,

Over spending to try and stay in the best league in the world coupled with bad management is a recipe for disaster. This also makes the job in hand harder for future managers.

Calderwood has had a fairly big budget for a league 1 manager but will he receive enough backing if we are promoted to seal a return to the premiership? This is needed, as our current squad is some way of the top teams currently in the championship.

I hope am not been presumptuous in assuming we will be in the championship next season and will gladly have to worry about staying in that league next year.
