Aitor Karanka has confirmed that Ryan Yates will be leaving Nottingham Forest on loan but still has to “make the decision” on which club he’ll join.

The 21-year-old has struggled for playing time this season and could benefit from getting minutes elsewhere. Yates is believed to have interest from Portsmouth of League One, but Karanka says he won’t commit on a side until he’s sure they’ll be the best fit for him.

He told Nottingham Live on Thursday: “A player like him has a lot of options, because he is a very good player and he was close to leaving in the summer. I have been speaking with him, because he is an amazing kid and he has a very good future.

“The club and myself will try to find the best team for his development, because that is an important step for him. I know that Portsmouth want him, because I have been in touch with Kenny. But there are more teams who are interested in him as well.”

Yates has made just one appearance for Forest which came against Bury in the EFL Cup in August. The midfielder hasn’t even made the matchday squad in any other game and finds himself playing exclusively for the reserves. Yates has embarked on a series of loan moves and may be open to a temporary switch elsewhere if it gets him minutes with another Football League club.

The 21-year-old made 19 appearances for Barrow (August 26, 2016 – November 25, 2016), contributing six goals, before spending time at Shrewsbury Town (January 31, 2017 – May 31, 2017) where he made 12 appearances. Yates has also made 29 appearances for Notts County (August 4, 2017 – January 10, 2018), contributing nine goals and most recently racked up 18 appearances (2 goals, 1 assist) for Scunthorpe United (January 11, 2018 – May 31, 2018).
